In the original Trek, Khan, with his brown skin, was an Übermensch, intellectually and physically perfect, possessed of such charisma and drive that despite his efforts to gain control of the Enterprise, Captain Kirk (and many of the other officers) felt admiration for him.

And that’s why the role has been taken away from actors of colour and given to a white man. Racebending.com has always pointed out that villains are generally played by people with darker skin, and that’s true … unless the villain is one with intelligence, depth, complexity. One who garners sympathy from the audience, or if not sympathy, then — as from Kirk — grudging admiration. What this new Trek movie tells us, what JJ Abrams is telling us, is that no brown-skinned man can accomplish all that. That only by having Khan played by a white actor can the audience engage with and feel for him, believe that he’s smart and capable and a match for our Enterprise crew.

Marissa Sammy on Star Trek: Into Whiteness.

perfect commentary which parallels what Rawles was saying earlier about the possibility of Moriarty being a person of color

  • “…The actual issue is that black people aren’t often allowed to play full and complete characters, and an antagonist who isn’t unintelligent, thuggish cannon fodder is just as much of a rarity for black men as the stubbly hero who saves the world or wtfever. “
  • “…The stereotype in no way intersects with brilliant geniuses who choose to step outside of the boundaries of society in order to exercise their intellect while having no concern for lesser beings.

Or to break it down further: the problematic stereotype regarding black people is that of being, in essence, subhuman. Characters of the Moriarty (and Holmes) archetype are rooted in being superhuman.”

You see? It’s more complicated than “people of color get typecast as villains.”

Black people get typecast as an extremely specific type of villain - they’re thugs, brutish and animalistic. South Asian actors are similarly typecast as scary oppressive (usually coded Muslim) terrorists.

But when your villain is of the superhuman archetype? When they’re brooding antiheroes, when they’re nuanced, when they’re multi-faceted?

They’re white.

(And check out this post on the glorification of white criminality in shows like Dexter, Breaking Bad, Weeds, Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos, etc.)

I usually write a post about the American Library Association’s top ten list of the banned, pulled, contested, and challenged books in American libraries every year, because more often than not the list is a lovely illustration of how our society is disproportionately uncomfortable with stories by women and minorities when they actually talk about their experiences as women or minorities.
But this year everything’s pretty equitably awful. In fact, this is the first time since 2008 that male authors on the ALA list have outnumbered their distaff counterparts. Hooray?

Why is Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis being removed from Chicago Public Schools?
Here’s an e-mail from Chris Dignam, principal of Lane Tech College Prep High School in Chicago, instructing removal of all copies of Persepolis from Chicago Public School libraries, classrooms, and curricula. As it states, no reason was given for this action.
Marjane Satrapi’s memoir about living in Iran during the 1970s revolution and eventually emigrating to France, and its animated film adaptation (which received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature), have faced challenges in Middle Eastern countries for obvious reasons. Challenges in the United States have been rare, but sadly not unheard of. In 2009, parents in the Northshore School District in Washington state complained about its language and a scene in which a man is urinated on after being tortured; in that case, the school board voted unanimously to keep the book and film in schools. Could Chicago have received similar complaints? Or, as some reports indicate, has there merely been some mix-up about whether the books have been paid for and by whom?
According to retired Chicago teacher Fred Klonsky, students in a journalism course in the district were the first to report the book’s removal from their class. There are also claims that students have planned a protest for today.
My opposition to all forms of censorship is assuaged by the knowledge that now every student in Chicago Public Schools is going to try to get their hands on a copy. If this is indeed a case of censorship rather than confusion over payment, I would be very surprised if it would be upheld on the school board level, but let’s just get the CBLDF on the line, just to be sure.

I am a street photographer in New York City. Several months ago, I was approached by a representative of DKNY who asked to purchase 300 of my photos to hang in their store windows “around the world.” They offered me $15,000. A friend in the industry told me that $50 per photo was not nearly enough to receive from a company with hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue. So I asked for more money. They said “no.”Today, a fan sent me a photo from a DKNY store in Bangkok. The window is full of my photos. These photos were used without my knowledge, and without compensation.I don’t want any money. But please REBLOG this post if you think that DKNY should donate $100,000 on my behalf to the YMCA in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. That donation would sure help a lot of deserving kids go to summer camp. I’ll let you guys know if it happens.

Canadian, Cat-Loving Tumblrers, I need your attention, please.

To the Canadian cat lovers of Tumblr, from Ontario or Quebec; the Valleyfield SPCAis giving out free cats due to the over-population within their establishment. One-hundred cats are being given away, and they must find a home by the end of February, 2013. If these cats don’t find a home, they will be euthanized.

All of these cats have been vaccinated, de-wormed, had flea treatments, and fixed. These cats are all very friendly, affectionate and lovable- they do not deserve to be put to sleep like this. The cats are all one year old, and in desperate need of a home. If you know someone within the area looking for a free, treated and healthy cat- throw them in this direction. Please.

I just can’t stand to see this, as a cat lover myself. I already have two who do not like new-comers, and I’m not in the area or financial stability to take another in. Please, please, please; consider these poor cats. They deserve better than this. Ugh, this is making me cry. Please, take a look. Spread the word around. See if we can save a few lives. These babies deserve better than this. Please. Look at them. They deserve a family too.

If you have any questions, please direct them to the KIJIJI PAGE made to try and get the information out there.

TL;DR: Free cats. All de-wormed, given flea treatments, fixed, and vaccinated. If they aren’t found homes by the end of February they will be put to sleep. Kijiji page is above, for the Valleyfield SPCA. Please help them find a home and save a few lives, please.

This is almost up to one-thousand notes- I think we did it! Thank you! <3 I had forgot to add, our lovely Canadians from Quebec!

Costco’s average pay, for example, is $17 an hour, 42 percent higher than its fiercest rival, Sam’s Club. And Costco’s health plan makes those at many other retailers look Scroogish. One analyst, Bill Dreher of Deutsche Bank, complained last year that at Costco “it’s better to be an employee or a customer than a shareholder.” Mr. Sinegal begs to differ. He rejects Wall Street’s assumption that to succeed in discount retailing, companies must pay poorly and skimp on benefits, or must ratchet up prices to meet Wall Street’s profit demands. Good wages and benefits are why Costco has extremely low rates of turnover and theft by employees, he said. And Costco’s customers, who are more affluent than other warehouse store shoppers, stay loyal because they like that low prices do not come at the workers’ expense. “This is not altruistic,” he said. “This is good business.

How Costco Became the Anti-Wal-Mart - New York Times (via alexdarke)

THIS IS NOT ALTRUISTIC. THIS IS GOOD BUSINESS. Holy shit, when the fuck will that sink through every fucking person’s head. You pay a worker a living wage, HOLY SHIT THEY WILL SPEND MONEY ON THINGS AND KEEP THE ECONOMIC WHEEL TURNING. You keep a worker healthy, HOLY SHIT THEY WON’T LOSE PRODUCTIVITY. You treat a worker well, HOLY SHIT THEY FUNCTION BETTER AT THEIR JOB.

(via feignedwisdom)

It’s true.   There’s a whole book called “Sabotage” about the things employees do when they’re angry with their employer.  I’ve committed acts of sabotage on the job myself.

Also, a good reminder that Costco is a fantastic company and a business worth supporting.  They’re one of like five huge US brands that doesn’t donate to Republicans.

But yeah — the problem is that the prevailing school of economic thought in the United States doesn’t believe in any of those things you mentioned, Twig.  Our economic system is totally Ferengi in nature.

There’s more information at the startup’s Indiegogo site. An NECN interview sheds a little extra light on the subject, and WPI has recognized the project’s potential with a prestigious award.
So Tumblr. You’re notorious for attacking rape culture; just think how much this could do to fix that problem. At time of posting DrinkSavvy is at $2,500 of its $50,000 goal. Let’s signal boost it.

It is so disgusting that we have to worry about this kind of thing.  But DUDE how awesome is it that someone is making something like this!  PLEASE signal boost and donate if you can!

It’s incredibly sad that we need this, but it’s incredibly awesome that someone decided to make this.

So Here's the Slut-Shaming, Homophobic Post on Superheroes by... the Director of Guardians of the Galaxy

batgirlrising:

Generally, I don’t make a habit of making news posts about things that happened on the Internet more than a year ago. Unless, of course, it managed to slip everyone’s attention and is just blowing up now. I also don’t make a habit of writing news posts about random people on the internet being jerks. Unless, of course, they’re not random people at all, but people with significant power over either legal matters or the media we consume. The case of “The 50 Superheroes You Most Want to Have Sex With,” or rather, the content of the commentary on the post of that name by writer/director James Gunn last year. See, in between last February and now, Gunn was tapped as the director for the first new set of characters to be introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 2, The Guardians of the Galaxy.

Read more here.

Gross. Just gross.

Marvel, is this REALLY someone you want representing you?  Really?  Is this what you want associated with your brand image?

I will not see this movie.  I will be telling everyone WHY I am not seeing this movie, and I am going to keep boosting the signal.  Because this is Not Okay.  Not here, not now, not ever.
